roads are the main roads thats why you dont hear people say the main lane or avenue.
streets come off roads and avenues and lanes and close come off streets. Avenues come off roads.

Or I could explane it better like this -

road; hard track for use of vehicles: a long surfaced route broad enough for vehicles to be driven on it (often used in placenames)

street; public road in town: a public road, especially in a town or city, usually lined with buildings

lane; narrow street: a narrow path, road or street, typically in older town areas or in the countryside, often enclosed by walls or hedges

Avenue; transport wide street: a wide street or road in a town

Think of it this way, In a 50 square kilometer area of suberbia, there would be like 6 roads,20 avenues, 1000 streets and about 400 lanes.

Lanes, streets and avenues are all roads. A street is usually a broad urban road whereas a lane is narrower. An avenue is lined with trees.
