Measure around the inside lip of the tank where the hood would go. The subtract about 2 inches for space for the filter and other needed items. Then go to a glass shop and ask them to cut window pane glass for the top. If they have them cut two peices that toal your size it will be easy for you to use one for the back and one for the front. Glue a paperclip or something like like that on the front piece to make a handle. The fish don't really need a light so a nearby lamp will provide all the light they need. Much cheaper than a hood and it will last years.

A temporary solution that will keep the tank covered and let light in is go to you nearby Walmart and buy a glass cutting board and place it on top. They come all different sizes so you can get one that would probably sit down in the open space or you can get one that sits on top so that you can lift it easier to feed the fish. If you use the smooth side down towards the fish tank, you can recycle the cutting board once you can buy the proper top and use it in your kitchen or on your coffee table, dresser or table to sit things else on .

Anything that is flat and large enough will work although it may not allow you to use your lights if it isn't clear enough to allow light through. The only good solution is a new glass top. You should be able to buy one at Petsmart or Petco for less than $20 or $30.

Don't know if you got anything yet, but was going to suggest going to a store and looking for one of the cheap plastic seed starter kits - they have a clear plastic cover to create a "greenhouse". If you really need something quick, clear plastic wrap and tape - just poke a few holes for air exchange.

Coroplast, a sign material. Standard size is 18x24. Call your local sign shop and see if the will sell a blank cheap. You can get a pre-printed "For Sale" one cheaply too. It is like cardboard, only plastic. Easy to cut with scissors. Would do for now...

what I did with my octagon tank was to use a piece of plywood traced the tank on to the plywood and cut it out.I then cut out the areas needed for the light and filter system. It is working great for my tank.
