I had given up smoking for 20 years! I did miss it though. Then I became severely depressed and started smoking again...it did help...I'm still smoking now and not ready to give up.
At my worst times, my smoking was almost continuous...I think it's because I wasn't interested in doing much else because I was so depressed whereas smoking was easy and relaxing.

Hmm. I'm a non smoker. But did you started smoking because you felt depressed? Think you mind is used to that feeling of "relaxation" given by the cigarette whenever you are depressed. It's like when the sky is dark, your brain knows it's time to sleep etc.

Mainly, this is because the nicotine in tobacco is a highly addictive drug. “In a ranking of the addictiveness of psycho-active drugs, nicotine was determined to be more addictive than heroin and cocaine,” states WHO.
Unlike heroin and cocaine, nicotine does not produce dramatic evidence of intoxication, so it is easy to underestimate its power. Yet the mild sense of euphoria it produces keeps most people smoking so as to experience the feeling repeatedly. Nicotine really does alter your mood; it does soothe anxiety, and that is why you turn to it more when you are depressed.

the nicotine feels good I geuss. yeah, it happens to me as well. Also, right after a meal, or a few drinks, or with coffee, or while waiting --- pretty much any excuse will do.
