I just found out that the car is a '92 model, BUT, the owner thinks the engine may be a '94. I have a '96 Eclipse. I know with a good deal of work, that changing out motors could be a possibility. However, didn't the body and motors change in '95?? Should I try with the '94 motor, OR just try and find me a '95 and up motor for my car?? Thanks!

If your car is a turbo model GST or GSX then go with the 1g motor. It's a 6-bolt rather than the 7-bolt which was in the 2g (95-99). It's a stronger motor and many people actually do a 6-bolt swap in their 2g eclipses. Some people have done it because the 7-bolt is more likely to crankwalk or it had crankwalk. The engine mounts do line up but there are some modifications. On magnus motorsports they have a great tech article on putting a 1G engine into a 2G car.

Note: If your car is non-turbo RS or GS then the older motor won't fit (without a lot of modifications and a lot of money). It's a 420a engine which was also found in the dodge neon around the same time the 2g eclipses were out.

The first generation (1990 - 1994) was built on the Chrysler D platform. The second generation (1995 - 1998) was built on the Chrysler PJ platform. ...so yes, the body definitely changed. The engines did change, but one of the available engines is a carryover from the first generation.
Your car was also sold through Chrysler as the Eagle Talon. If you can't find an Eclipse, look for this car.
Considering your car is a '96 (second generation), you are best off using an engine from a second generation car.
The wiki article I show below lists the model numbers of the engines that were used in each generation and trim level and other information about the car.

Okay, it is possible for that motor to fit in your car, but it would require a butt load of modifications. For example, it would require another transmission and some electrical wiring. The bad thing with getting another transmission, is that the first generation eclipse's (89- 94) are known to have transmission problems. You are correct when saying that the motors did change in 1995. You would be better off finding a motor from a 1995 or newer dodge neon, dodge stratus, Chrysler Cirrus, and of course.... a Mitsubishi Eclipse. All of these cars that I mentioned have very identical motors and will work with your eclipse. Good luck to you and I hope this helped you out!!!!

the key point is the owner "thinks' so this is telling us he really doesn't know that much about the car or the engine and he may not be trust worthy --and looking for an easy mark--don't let him take u in.

In most places you actually can't use an older engine. you have to use an engine from the year your car was made or newer. It's mostly for emissions reasons.

most salvage (junk) yards can tell you witch engines are interchangeable. and also at very least if its not right will get you a different one. a private individual isn't going to take it back if it doesn't work. i would just keep looking till you find the right engine. good luck
