I not sure, but, I do know on a Gateway removing the CMOS Battery, Regular Battery and unplugging from the wall, DOES NOT remove the password. The password is stored in the BIOS not the CMOS. I am assuming Compaq is the same. As stated you may be able to try Software for this. The other is contact Compaq and you may have to send them the Laptop. I would advise you be very sure this not Stolen. You can be charged with "Theft by receiving" even when you not know and are actually a victim. I just say this as a warning.

You can still remove the battery for the cmos. Open it up and take out the little silver battery, also make sure that you have the main battery out and it is unplugged. Near the cmos battery there may be some jumpers that you can set to erase the password. Leae it like that for a couple of seconds and you should be good to go.
DO NOT short circuit your motherboard. Unless you want a new board that is.

Two things to try were already mentioned that I have done on previous computers. Removing the battery is the easiest, so try that first, then you will have to look in a manual how to move the motherboard jumper to reset the cmos. That will do it for sure if the battery doesn't do it.
It is not short-circuiting the motherboard. You just move the jumper from one set of pins to the other. It is not risky.

Call the tech team, if you dint set the password then it must be a manufacturer's default password already set when you bought the laptop.... I am sure they must have listed it somewhere in the user manual of the laptop.... But if thats not a handy solution the only non-risky way to deal with this problem is to call the tech team and they will have your answer in seconds..... all the best.........

I think there are some Linux distributions that crack the bios password, like Slax (ophcrack version)..
I have no knowledge on this but i read somewhere that it can be done..
So i just did a search with appropriate parameters and got the results on the link below..
Hope it helps :) & Good luck

The BIOS password, as far as I'm aware, can be bypassed by switching a jumper on the motherboard. This certainly worked on P3 Desktops. I'm not up on laptops, but would assume it would be simular. Good luck!

don't comprehend whats incorrect yet once you disconnect the The battery on the motherboard and use a paper clip and short the contacts, it is going to revert to no password default. The battery sounds like an over-sized watch battery.

If this password is encoded on to an EEPROM you ain't going anywhere.
The only way to remove it is to obtain the software that was used to write/encode the chip from the manufactures, and they will want to know all manner of things.
