If you were offered a promotion that you thought would be really boring, but would look good on a resume, would you do it? Assume you knew you would only be with that company for a few more years and then would move on. This promotion is more a change in status and responsiblity, but not a huge increase in pay.

some more details- I currently manage one isolated facility. The promotion would involve managing two facilities for a small pay increase. It would not give me many new skills, but my resume would show increased responsibility.

Not if I didn't like the job.....

There might be a different promotion that would be better

The other possibility is that, you might be in a totally different field in 5 years that doesn't care what you did at that company.

It's not always good to look too far ahead.

If you want to a make more money and move up potential in the future, it doesn't hurt. If you really prefer your current position, you can deny it and say you are happy where you're at. If it doesn't pay much more and is alot more responsibility you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? Perhaps there will be other promotions that'll come along that will be better. I don't think many people stay with their places of employment forever anymore. Always keep all your options open though, you never know what is around the corner.

This is difficult since you are on one side of the equation. You think that it would be a boring job, but you also indicate that the responsibility level would change. It might be an opportunity for you to learn new things and expand your skills.

If it's a learning opportunity, I'd take it. Otherwise I probably would not. There is no point in spending hours each day doing something you dislike if you have the choice not to do so.

Many times the key factor is the movement to another region that inhibits change and promotion. I have turned down an offer like that, with more income included, because it meant pulling up stakes, and planting new roots. Looking back I know it was the right thing, as the company went belly up soon after for unrelated, and corporate choices that were made policy.

No- A promotuion in much more responsibility whithout a large pay increase is called "being used". Especially if your title doesn't change. Be pro-active and start your own job search for a real promotion - somewhere else.

If the promotion will bring positive enhancement to your future career, it could be advisable to try it out since it is just for a short period. The future benefit of the promotion has got to be weighed vis-a-vis the low income it brings now.
