I want to lay bermuda sod. The area is a lot of bare dirt, weeds, and possibly some patches of St. Augustine. The area used to be more shaded, but I cut a tree down. I believe tilling the area would be troublesome as I would run into a lot of tree roots. Can I just spread an inch or two of topsoil over the whole area and lay the sod? Do I need to kill what's there before I do this?

Yes you should kill the old grass and weeds, eventually they will come through if you don't.The roots are from the tree you cut down? I would try and till the best you can and areas you can't do well because of the roots add some top soil.

What did you do with the stump? A stump grinder will take care of that and the roots. A bit of work though.

in spite of in the journey that they took care to butt the ends at the same time nicely, you nonetheless ought to have strains. Granted if the strains are more advantageous than an inch or 2 huge, yeah, they could were sloppy. If there's a melancholy alongside those strains, you should do a touch filling with more advantageous soil. even if, once the grass starts off transforming into, all disappears. one element i'd be careful about isn't to enable those ends dry.....perchance it truly is why you're seeing strains. possibly the sod dried somewhat on the ends. after all, you want to adhere to the learning given to you about care alongside with protecting the sod moist (no longer soggy) till it knits to the soil. once the roots have taken carry leaf and runner growith will start up.

Sod is expenisive, so you need to do it right the first time. Yes, you need to till and level the ground. If your soil is unhealthy, don't add topsoil (a lot of cheap topsoil has weed seeds in it), add a layer of compost instead. Good luck!
