Guitar Hero 3? I actually don't think there's going to be a "Guitar Hero 3". Red Octane, the company that makes the Guitar Hero games was bought out by Neversoft. Shortly thereafter they applied for copyrights on the names: "Guitar Villain" and "Drum Villain". So I do not believe we will see a "Guitar Hero 3" we will most likely see a "Guitar Villain" spin-off of the games.
For those of you who don't know much about Neversoft's past projects. Let's examine the Tony Hawk saga. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (the first one) was amazing. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was good but not nearly as good as the first. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was just bad. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was a feeble attempt at saving the series. Then they came out with all the other horrible games after that.
With this in mind, Guitar Hero as we know it is gone. We'll have to watch in horror as Neversoft destroys another perfectly good game by creating 13 too many sequels/spin-offs.

GameDaily has broken the news that Guitar Hero has changed development houses. Formerly at Harmonix, creators of Karaoke Revolution, Amplitude and EyeToy: Antigrav, the Guitar Hero franchise looks to have been taken under the wing of Neversoft, famous for their Tony Hawk skateboarding games and Gun.
While unconfirmed, GameDaily writes that Neversoft will be focusing on a proper sequel in Guitar Hero III. Why the change? It's unknown, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Harmonix team working on a wholly original product, one of their own choosing. The Guitar Hero formula is mostly set, with little in the way of new songs, new themes, new artwork and minor gameplay tweaks necessary for a successful sequel. Michael McWhertor

No, I do not know if there will be a number III but i do know they are making one for the Xbox 360, but they keep changing the release date.
