This happens to me too. What I try and do is whatever I am doing at the moment I try to concentrate soley on the actual thing that I am doing with. If you are walking down the street, concentrate on the errand you are doing. If your reading a book put your full concentration on every word. In fact just now as I am typing the thought that always try not to visualize came to my mind now. So I will try and concentrate only on my typing as I type. Got the Idea. It works for me.
I would like to add that if this is something that happened recently it will enter your mind more frequetly.. What I happened to me was about a hear and half ago, and it does not happen that often anymore. In fact it hasn't happend for along time till I answered your question.
Also type in your web browser undersirable thoughts, there are alot of web sites on stoping them.

You mind is like a computer that only can allow so much RAM to operate at a give time. Learn to shift your thoughts to another "program" if you will, a program like humming a song, or dreaming about a Tahiti vacation, or a childhood Christmas memory, or some other thought. When an unwanted thought comes into your mind, shift to the "childhood memory program" or similar and start thinking about that. Because you mind only has so much RAM, you will be able to shut out undesired thoughts.

Ignore the bad and irrelevant thoughts.
Keep occupied either in physical or mental work other than sleep(not more than 8 hrs).
Mind is an independant entity and it is a monkey inside your head invisible to all including yourself. You have to ignore it and losing attention it will stop doing bad things for you.
Train and allow the mind to mind its own business.
Call it for help only when required.Otherwise ignore it.
Don't feed it with unwanted information from external sources.

Thoughts are always going to enter your mind.
If it's the same thought all the time, maybe it's an unresolved issue that you have to work out before it will go away.

I'd try reading but there is also something I do.
-It's almost like meditating, but easier. TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT PENGUINS. it gets me going. Once I stop thinking about penguins I'm not thinking about anything near my previous thoughts.
Its also extremely enjoyable ^-^

The real question is: "Why is it unwanted?"
If you feel that it is something wrong (like thinking about killing someone) then you have to deal with your anger issues. If its something not inherently wrong but its something that you just don't accept, they you have to discover why you think these things.
