You're supposed to begin counting on the first day your period starts...but I don't think it's too reliable, my period is usually late.

What day did your last period stop? In normal period people, the maximum number of days between periods, unless there is a medical circumstance (birth, cancer, perimenopause), is 31. Count from the last day of your last period to the first day of the next one. Some people, unless their periods are really regulated, may have a slight variation. When you have a minute, begin to mark on your calendar the start and stop dates over at least a 3-4 month period. Study it. Do your cycles run 26-28 days apart before the next one, every 23 days, etc.? It will help you not to get as messy in general and with planned parenting as well. How to get as close as you can to having a baby on a specific day? Count 7 days more from the last day of your period before conception. Add 9 months.

You count from the first day of your last cycle. Most women have a 28 day cycle but it is not unusual to go as long as 40 days. That's why it helps to keep track.
