are videos not 'real time applications'.
Is music not a 'real time application'.
If you are talking about magnetic computer storage tape... ie, Dat's and DLT's, they take a (relatively) long time to hunt through, for information.
with a disc, you can access any part of the disc in _microseconds_. with a DLT compter storage tape, if you need to access something at the end of the tape, the only way to read that information is to run the whole tape, which could take 100's of _seconds_

It's more convenient to use disks now for recording but for years magnetic tape was the standard for recording studios and many people still have video tape recorders. It still has wide applications.

Well what do you have in-mind? Its not why its not used but more why use it? When there are a host of so many better and financially viable alternatives. Spiritualist use it though, they like listening to all the white noise, weird!
