It's like giving an animal a hysterectomy or vasectomy so they can't reproduce. It just helps control the stray animal population.

Others have explained the technicalities of spay/neuter so I'll not repeat that information. BUT ... it absolutely should be done. Just as soon as the pet is old enough (I think most need to be 6 mos) or before they are brought home if adopted at an older age.

In addition to the other health benefits already described it also lowers an animals risk of viral disease, firstly because they aren't mating and fighting to get it and secondly because being entire and breeding is stressful and lowers the animals immunity.
It's also nicer for the neighbours if they don't have to put up with your pets annoying them.
Because of things like rabies etc, the animals have to be controlled, they endanger public health and the cost to society is enormous. There are already too many pets without homes.
Consider this, an average litter is 4 and a cat can reproduce around four times a year. An unspayed female cat, her mate and all of their offspring, producing only 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving kittens per litter can total:
1 year: 12
2 years: 67
3 years: 376
4 years: 2,107
5 years: 11,801
6 years: 66,088
7 years: 370,092
8 years: 2,072,514
9 years: 11,606,077
An unspayed female dog, her mate and all of their puppies, if none are ever neutered or spayed, add up to:
1 year: 16
2 years: 128
3 years: 512
4 years: 2,048
5 years: 12,288
6 years: 67,000
Don't contribute to the tragedy of homeless cats and dogs.

Spaying- Vet ties the female cat or dogs tubes so she can't have any babies.
Neutering-Vet cuts off cat or dogs testicles so he can't make babies.
It should be done to control the animal population. If you have a hoe dog that stays outside and has their way with all the other dogs on the block.
Have you ever watched the Price is Right??? Bob Barker talks about it every episode!!!
It is very important to do this! (seriously)

Neutering is the removal of the testicals in animals. In large animals it is also called castration.
It is done to remove sex drive and help with aggression in dogs. It lowers the risks of cancer in them also.
Spaying is the removal of the ovaries and uterus of the female. It is done so the dog does not come into heat. It lowers the risk of cancer and pyometras. It also prevents unwanted puppys or babies.
