Hi! This by far is the best question I have seen yet. Very, very good. And I think I am the best person to answer it! Okay, I am 26 I have 3 wonderful children ages 6, 5 and 18 months. When I was 18 I got with this idiot who was hooked on drugs and drinking, being immature and stupid I stayed with him not knowing how to leave (I still have dreams all the time about getting rid of him :( ) Anyway he was 14 years older than me. And he was a welfare bum. Noone in my family had ever been on welfare. I wanted to work and did some of the time, I also went to school where the asshole lived off my student loan. He was a grown man and should have known better. I got pregnant and had my daughter and a year later had a son. The asshole began hitting me and verbally abusing me. And mentally abusing my children. It took me 2 years after it started (the abuse) to finally get rid of him ( after my parents bought a minihome for me and my kids to try to have a good life in a descent home.) He meanwhile kidnapped my children, I had to get the police to get my kids back, he kept coming around an causing ALOT of ****...meanwhile the whole time I was with him was 5 years, and he worked a total of maybe 5 months if that. He was on welfare his whole life! He is sure to be still on it and will be for the rest of his life and there are soo many more just like him! But meanwhile, in the summer's he's a carny. Running around with a carnival! He would bike 50 miles a day if he had to for a fix. He would spend the baby's milk or diaper money if he needed dope, cigarettes, or liquar. Soo glad I'm rid of him. Back to my point now he could have worked but welfare bums are welfare bums. There are jobs that pay under the table to people on welfare if someone was to look hard enough, and it's not that hard. When I got rid of him anyway I applied for welfare as there was no money coming in for food. I got it and was on it for about a year, I also used Salvation Army (god bless) for help in groceries. Now my boyfriend of 3 years is a dear, wouldn't hurt a fly. He works everyday. He's a real man. He's supports all of us, and we have a baby. I am taking a distance ed. course and all is good. I plan to repay Salvation Army in forms of donations for all the help they gave me. As for welfare, I think someone like me should deem if they need it or not because I know there is a job for EVERYONE. I also think you are right the governments could do a lot for the workforce in means of employment. Too many people are lazy and drug addicted probably 90% that are on welfare, that is because the government is so crooked. Good people don't get enough because bad people are taking most of it. I've gone also to the food bank years ago and people driving mustang's and nice new beautiful cars are gowing in and getting food for themselves. There are a lot of people out there that aren't of any use to society whatsoever.

Each case should be handled individually, and no one should be FORCED into picking up garbage in order to receive some aid.
I think that "moms" (why did you use quotation marks? Do you think that "welfare moms" are any less mom-like than those who happen to have a job or a rich husband who hasn't left them {yet}????) should be able to stay home with their children until the children are in school. It is senseless to FORCE them to get meaningless "jobs", while sending their children to state-paid day care centers staffed with equally low-paid people who could not possibly care for the kids as well as thier own parent!
Why should an engineer who has lost his job, and is on hard-times for a few months, have to "pull weeds"?
Do you "work"? You've said many times that your "wonderful" husband has a great job, so you don't have to. What if your wonderful bread-winner left you? (It's been known to happen.)..(.I once had a great husband, quite a bit of money, and a happy home.) Would YOU wash sidewalks???
Your bias and racism show through almost every question you ask or answer...

I think welfare is good for people that really need it. I have watched a close family member really struggle in the past and has really relied on it. Sure, he could have taken a job at McDonalds or a gas station but those jobs pay next to nothing and this man has a family to support. His unemployment paid more and they had to depend on food stamps to eat (which is welfare) He also has a degree and could not find a job in his field. He is working now in his field and he is happier and trying to catch up where he got behind when he was not working but if it had not have been for the food stamps, they would not have been able to eat.
Also, say there is a single mom... She has 2 kids. Say the dad is in prison or dead or just does not care and she has no child support. Should she take a minimum wage job and put her kids in day care? She would be spending nearly all of her pay check on day care and could not pay her bills. Or she could stay home and get that check coming in every month to pay her bills and she is taking care of her kids.
There are SSOOO MANY people out there that need it. I am just glad that I am not one of them.
On the other hand, there are so many people that take advantage of the system. I am glad what Clinton did for Welfare reforms but I think that more changes should be made.

And we agree on so little...
BUT this one, yes. Unless there is some pressing problem, like infants at home or physical or mental handicap, yes.
The "getting something for nothing" mentality has to be broken and if the prospect of work was attached to welfare, it would mean more, the people getting welfare will aid the community instead of being a dead weight and maybe, just maybe, start to develop some sort of work ethic.
Right now, many are ingrained with the entitlement syndrome - permanent victims to their own life style. Break that syndrome and perhaps a new generation will see that work is good and, better yet, work builds self respect.

I feel that if the State is giving a family a check and paying for the welfare of the family. Than yes, the adult family member should do community service or better termed Volunteer work. Help out in local shelter and food cupboards. Clean up around town. Do volunteer work for the town. Of course there are some exceptions. Some are disabled. But that doesn't mean other welfare families should not volunteer to help them.

Personally, I think that cash assistance should be issued only on an emergency basis. If this were to happen, there would be more money to help those who do work, but can't make ends meet ie.. health insurance, education subsidies, daycare, etc... Too many people sit on the welfare rolls having child after child, never attempting to better their situation or themselves. All the while there are people trying to raise themselves up who aren't eligible for any assistance. Is it any wonder why people hate the system so much?

one million) Do you extremely need to spend extra tax money paying somebody to take a seat down there and wade with the aid of shop reciepts for each individual on welfare? Having labored in 'the device' for a competent 4 years, i'm able to inform you that if there are any Welfare Queens living in huge homes with fancy cloths and corvettes... I in no way observed them. Do people use the device? confident. this occurs because of the fact once you permit the government take over all of a individual's charges and punishes the guy for doing something on their very own. You get them government subsidized housing and government nutrition and government new child care and government decreased utillities. then you definately tell them in the event that they get a job or initiate proving that they might function on their very own, the government is going to take each and every thing away. this does not produce lots of of persons who're inspired to get off welfare. 2) there are a number of states that try this. I disagree, for my area. it is kinda demanding to circulate stumble on a paying job once you're out mowing grass for loose. for sure, you do no longer comprehend the 1st damn ingredient with regard to the welfare device. tutor your self before working off on the mouth.

This is a major point of separation between the conservative (or, more accutately, the 'traditionalist' ) and liberal philosophies.
Other than the (proven) physically or mentally impaired in our society, ALL recipients of community largesse should be compelled to give something back in terms of time, talent and effort.
BTW, Milwaukee is a perfect example of the liberal mindset in action.
Violence,poverty,crime and apathy.
Perhaps all those negatives would be reduced if people were made to work for their handouts.
After all, idle hands ARE the devils workshop.

There are already people who clean offices, pick up garbage and wash sidewalks. These people chosee to work there and get paid to do what they do.
If you force people to do sometihng they don't want to, you are no different than Stalin..
You are right, there are people who abuse the system, who go on welfare but could easily flip burgers at MDonalds-but they don't.
However, just because there are people who abuse the system, you can't simply withdraw help from those who are in real need. In theory, people go on welfare because they need it, and most likely because they can't afford to work. They may be disabled or have kids to look after, or got metal problems.. lots of reasons.
If you want to live in a society where the rich don't help the poor, i suggest you immigrate to USA, its getting there pretty fast.
I personally would rather live in a society where wealth is distrubuted more equally.
