im a little over 8 months pregnant & last night about 3 hrs after having sex i had HORRIBLE contractions fr. 11-1am they were every 3 minutes & wrapped around my front 2 my back i tried walking, sitting, everything 2 get them 2 subside maybe. ive been pregnant before & i figured if this IS labor ill do most of it @ home so i found a position on my bed where i could tolerate the pain, finally around 1 i woke up my husband told him im getting in the shower & that if i dont feel better we have 2 go. i jumped in (still feeling them) laid back down in bed & counted them. i have not slept in 2 days (due to my son being sick with a virus) so even though it hurt i was able 2 fall asleep. i woke up this morning & i now have the braxton hicks (i could tell because theyre not going around my back & still painful but alot less painful) & they are every 10-20 mins now & this is since 7am. my ? is was last nights contractions braxton hicks even though they were perfectly timed and VERY painful?

sweetie It very well could have been the real thing last nigh.It sounds to me as though it was and then the labor stopped. The s*x could have thrown you into labor along with the stress from your other baby being sick. And after you stayed off of your feet and rested then they subsided. The braxton hicks today could begin your labor again or it very well may not.Do you have a Dr's appointment any time soon? If not i would call them and see if maybe they would want to check you to see if you have dilated any.Or you could just watch yourself and if you begin to have contractions again or have any bleeding then i would defiantly give your Dr a call to see what they advise you to do, good luck and best wishes

My last pregnancy I was in labor for about a month. I know that doesn't seem even possible, but she was a pre-mie and they had to keep stopping it. I found out first hand that you can have contractions (real ones) for a day, or even two then it would just stop. Then a day later they would come back until I would go in and they would stop it with Turp. During the 2nd or 3rd week of this I was having timed contractions about 2 minutes apart that just didn't make me dilate. They were painful and real contractions, but just weren't doing anything. I know it's a pain if your really not in labor, but you should get checked to see if you're dilated. Hope this helps you.

Most likely they were braxton hicks but if you continue to have painful ones accompanied by lower back pain and more than 4 in an hour I would call your Dr to get her input on this matter.

You may have started active labor but is subsided. You and your husband should obstain from sex now. My doctor told me that sperm has the same chemical makeup of pitocen- used for induction- if you were given pitocen, labor would start, but you would have to have a constant iv for it to continue. I am assuming that your husbands sperm, along with nipple stimulation started your labor but your body balanced the hormones and all is well now. You may have begun dialating but your water- I am assuming- has not broken, so your best bet is to be careful. No more sex, and tell your husband not to touch your chest. This delivery is probably going to be a quick one.

Sex can bring on contractions due to prostaglandins in your husband's semen. If the contractions are very painful and don't subside and are regular you could call your doctor. Doctors are very good at determining whether or not you should go to the hospital based on how you sound over the phone.

Stress brought about by you not being able to sleep properly for 2 nights in a row, worrying about your other kiddies sickness, and having physical actiivity (in your case, sex) can induce premature labour contractions.

And you being able to sleep and rest earlier probably helped in relaxing your mind which ultimately affected your baby.

Midwives believe that the baby inside you also feels whatever it is that you're experiencing and feeling. It's the bond inside you.

So, when you're stressed, your baby also feels stressed. When you're well rested, it also translates to your baby.

I shouldn't worry too much about it.

But the safest thing to do is to contact your midwife or GP and discuss your concerns.

Good Luck!

It was probably the intercourse that caused the contractions. It is normal to start having contractions during your 8th month of pregnancy.

I believe it's perfectly normal, was probably just BH last night. The semen can cause your uterus to contract, that is what you were feeling.

If they return I would go to the ER to get monitored.

Everyone is saying that 'husbands semen causes contractions' but no one is mentioning that when you have the big 'O' it also contracts your uterus therefore starting what can feel like a series of contractions.

Please research this more. Here is a link that might help you as well. I personally have never heard of the semen causing contractions...
