Because it is cost prohibitive to operate.
There is not "no public transportation" on weekends and holidays - most major cities operate on those days, but at a lesser capacity/ frequency due to decreased ridership.

Public transportation has to be paid for, and is generally paid for by working commuters. Operating transportation to meet the needs of a few on the weekends and holidays means that large systems are being run at regular cost but bringing in a substantially smaller amount of revenue, therefore operating in the red.
I realize the plight of the elderly must be recognized, but on who's shoulders? Should raise the rates of the employed to meet the needs of the retired? Sorry, that already happens with a little thing called FICA - because trust me I am of the age I will never see a nickel in social security despite the fact that I will have paid into it for 50 years. I am not willing to also pay additional costs in transportation fees so that the elderly can have weekend/ holiday public transport. At my age (over 20 under 40) I base my life on what I can afford AND put away 5-7% of my income (aside from the FICA that I now pay as well) to cover my retirement. I cannot afford to be generous with my transportation budget.
I am sorry if I seem unsympathetic, but the working class is already paying enough, and in order to advance public transportation to weekends and holidays it would mean either more taxes or higher fees per rider, and that is simply not right.

I nice way to save money is to collect soda cans. separating the opener from the can.

the can makes Short change, because the factory has to clean all the ink off.

But the openers are straight aluminum with no paint stripping process. Making you more money.

it can be a little recycling hobby.

About your bus situation, their is usually a bus just for senior citizens to call and they will come pick you up from your house. They know that once your a certain age your not suppose to drive if you can't operate a car properly. If their isn't a transit, dart transportation you should possibly get senior citizens to gather and boycott the transit bus line, for answer and service.
