I tried to burn a disc today, only to discover that my disc drive can't be detected, I don't understand why, I can't think what I may have done. I've tried unistalling it in device manager, then re- started the compute, it didn't work, I've tried System restore, it won't work. I have recovery disc's that you have to do when you buy a new computer, but can't use them because of not being able to use the disc drive- argh! The computer says the driver may be corrupted or damaged, if this is the case, how can I get a updated driver on the net? I have a PC and am running Windows XP if thats any help. Thanks.

If you cant even use the recovery disk, then there is nothing in windows that is wrong, its more likely the disk drive is bad.....

Go into the BIOS and see if boot from cd is before boot from hard drive.....

While booting press esc, or delete to enter the bios screen....
Then find the boot options, and make sure the boot order is

1. cd rom
2. floppy
3. hard drive....

Ill have yahoo messenger on if you want further help....

Sometimes even a bad cdrom can be detected by the OS (operating system), The fact that you were able to uninstall it on device manager, meaning there's power and it's connected. . .
1.) I suggest you use a cd lens cleaner.
2.) If you have separate IDE cables for your harddisk and your cdrom, change the jumper settings. (from master to slave or vice versa)

Have you had the pc open at any stage?
It sounds to me like the IDE lead has come adrift.
Can the BIOS detect the drive?
