If you are going to a hotel in the Laval area, check to see if they have a shuttlebus service, since it is about 30-40 minutes to Laval from Pierre E. Trudeau Airport in Dorval. You may want to use Google Maps to see the route (use YUL as the source location for the airport).

If you are new to the city, I would simply take a taxi which will get you there fast. It is not cheap ($30-50) but you won't have to cart your luggage all over the public transit system.

If you have no luggage or don't mind hauling it around, there should be a shuttlebus (or a taxi) that can take you to the Dorval train station. You can then take the Dorion-Montreal direction train towards downtown for under $5.

Depending on where you are going in Laval, you can then take one of two trains:

For Western Laval, at downtown Central Station (Gare Centrale) switch to the Deux-Montagnes commuter line which will take you to St. Dorothee, Chomedey, and Laval West area for under $6.

For Mid- and Eastern Laval, you would catch the Montreal-St.Jerome train at downtown Central Station which gets you to Vimont, Pont Viau, and Auteuil areas of Laval for about $6.

Of course, once you are there, you will probably have to take a taxi or public bus to your ultimate destination ($10-15), so it may not save you much cash and will certainly take a lot longer as you have to depend on train schedules (every 30 minutes in rush hour, hourly during off hours, no trains after midnight or before 6am)

Which part of Laval (it's a pretty big place)?

Assuming you mean by taxi (it is possible to connect via busses and metro or - if you are lucky because they do not run often - commuter train - but it is aggravating) if your destination is in the west side of Laval one would take the Autoroute 20 to the Autoroute 13. Likewise for central or eastern Laval at evening rush hour (anytime after 15:30 to 19:00); even though its more distance you (probably) won't be stuck in the horrible creeping traffic of the DeCarie Expressway (Autoroute 15). For any other times for central or eastern the 15 should be cheaper and a few minutes faster. I do not know the taxi rates but I would guess that going to the northeast part of Laval would be at least double the cost of going to the southwest part.

Like with Toronto there is a bus shuttle service to the downtown area and then tak ethe Metro to Laval, a taxi from PET airport will cost you in upwards of $50, the trip from the terminal to the QE Hotel is 45 minutes, I used to have friend there and flew from Toronto a couple of times instead of the train. Then check the route map, there is a junction station not to far from the Place Ville Marie station you go to and connect to the line that services Laval, the cost of the shuttle and Metro is around $30, but it can take 2 hours to complete the trip, see if some one will give you a flat rate, especially if your coming in late at night, they do not have much business at that time of the day.
