My work situ is a little different than most. Essentially we stand a watch and wait for calls or email requests for urgent assistance. This is 24/7 position, with lots of dead time. My bosses most urgent priority is that we stay awake and keep an eye on the computer.
When Answers first came on, it was an accessible Y page and it really helped pass the time on 3rd shift.
And just as you begin to enjoy something... there are so many computer users where I work that they set up sophisticated web blockers, and periodically that install some newer more particular internet screener.
Now half the time I try to check something on a Y page, I get the "red-hand-of-death", and discovered a newly blocked page. The latest most frustrating one had been my Y mail!
I would not recommend just cleaning out the cookies and the history, first just the fact that it's been cleaned is suspicious. What are you trying to hide, ya know? And it isn't going to be your boss who does the checking, it'll be the IT guys for your company. Each company is different, but most will overlook folks who BRIEFLY check their email, and maybe their bank accounts. Afterall accessing those pages leaves trails and if your employer wanted to check on you they could.
It's best to just assume that nothing you do online at work is private. Write things like you KNOW your boss is looking over your shoulder, and save the "personal" stuff till your home.

I spend a long time on answers during my working day, and although I delete my internet files and history and cookies and think it does still get stored on the main server which is operated by our head office, but to be honest I have been here 2 years now and no one has said anything to me, apart from having a letter sent round which I had to sign about office procedures and it mentioned internet use is not allowed unless in your own time (lunch time) I signed it but I know everyone in the office are all regularly on the internet and I dont think head office bother to check the server so I dont worry about it. I know it is different in some offices though its a sackable offence.
racyragt what a lovely boss you are, and your statement is so true (who cares as long as the work gets done)

I'm a boss, and I regularly check the history - normally it's "next" or M&S. If I found porn or obvious illegal type sites I'd take action, but as long as the work gets done (and I can play on the pc) I generally let it slide.

Well, while at work, I use my personal Laptop and use a wireless network connection that is not work related. I work the weekend shift, and everyone knows that, when I am finsihed with what I need to get done, I play on the web.
I have certain jobs that have to be done on the weekend, and can only be done then, those get done and everyone is happy.
What I do after that (we need a licensed engineer in the building 24/7), is up to me. . .

I really wouldn't care because what I say on here, I can say in person...and why are there so many questions about people being on Yahoo Answers at work? Are you at work or something? Are you worried that you might get caught? If you're that worried, it's best that you don't get on it.

It would be easy to prove that I only answer questions while on break or while macros are running that prevent me from doing any other work.
