Way before. It was during the Mycenean rule. Sparta was under the king Menelaus and completely utterly different country and customs. I believe it was around 1400 BCE while 300 took place in 480 BCE. Thousand year difference. However the Spartans of 300 claimed they were descendants of Hercules who was also reported around the time of the Myceneans.

The Trojan War was long before the Spartans and the Battle of Thermopylae. The Battle of Troy was fought somewhere between 1300 BC to 1200 BC. The Spartans fought around 480 BC, making the battles about 750 years apart.

The Battle of Thermopylae was in 480BCE and the Trojan War is said to have taken ten years 1194BCE to 1184BCE. The Persian War is more historical than the Trojan War. Archaeology finds two wars at Troy. The tales say Herakles took Troy once and made Baby Priam heir after killing his treacheropus father laomedon who cheated Heracles. Priam was old in the second war.

Trojan War is believed to have been during the 12th or 13th Century BC. The Battle of Thermopylae (from the film "300") happened in 480 BC. So if the Trojan War is real, it happened first.

Long after. The Trojan war was in the very remote past, before the Greeks even had a written language. The Iliad and the Odyssey were transmitted orally for hundreds of years.
On edit: To be precise, the Trojan war--if it happened at all--occurred circa 1200 B.C.E. Thermopylae, the subject of 300, took place in 480 B.C.E. So thats a good 700 + years.
