The iPod IS an MP3 player.
The main differences between iPods and other MP3 players are:
the click wheel and menu system
the fact that you have to use iTunes to load music onto the thing.
The iPod actually plays MP3s natively. (It does NOT convert music to some other format, like many of Sony's older players did) It uses iTunes as a way to enforce DRM on DRM-infested songs. It will play non-DRM music, however, and usually will play music from other services than iTunes. You just have to use the iTunes client to load them.
Many other players (most, I think) will let you plug your player in, and drag-and-drop files, just like it would let you do with any hard drive. You can do that with an iPod, but the iPod will just store the files, it will not let you play them.
I do not own an iPod, because I loathe iTunes. Other than that, they're very good players. A little on the pricey side, but they are pretty much the best all-around choice. If you have specific preferences, look at other players. If you don't know what you're doing, get an iPod.
Oh, and any MP3 player can play podcasts. A podcast is just a regular MP3 (or other audio) file, the only difference is that they usually use some sort of subscription service, like that in iTunes. They've been around since AGES before some douchebag invented the word "podcast." Actually, since before the iPod.

An mp3 player is the means to play music, display photos, videos etc. An i-pod is just an mp3 player designed and manufactured by Apple (ya know, the makers of the i-mac) it's just a brand name mp3 player.

ipod has its own hard drive and uses different frameware (software) than other MP3 players. they do the same thing but run on different things. for example ipod uses itunes to load and unload songs onto your ipod. on many others u have to manually load songs or has another program to do it. thats the reason i sold my ipod. i like to load and unoad music manually and not have a program that sucks do it. thats the main difference! there are other but that the main. also most other MP3's (like the zune) can now play videos and music ect...
