It will be based on CO2 emissions, but we'll have to wait until Wednesday for the details.

There are problems in defining a "4x4", because it is not an official EC, EU or UK term. Vehicles are described on their registration certificate as a car, a light commercial vehicle, or some other form of commercial vehicle, etc.
How do you define a two-wheel-drive version of a normally 4x4 vehicle (e.g. RAV4, Hyundai Tucson)?
How do you define a Fiat Panda 4x4?
What about an Audi A3 quattro?
Or the new breed of crossover vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai and Fiat Sedici?

Oh, I'm sure the communistic car hater will make it fair:

-Fiesta 1.0i = 4x4
-Astra 1.4i = 4x4
-Mondeo = 4x4
-Freelander = 4x4

It'll no doubt work out fairly and inteligently simular to that... Oh, and of course:

-Prius = Large family car
-Smart = Family hatchback

Of course, it'd be unfair to say at this stage that the government dislike personal transport....

We won't know for certain until the budget has been published, but my guess is that they'll take as much as they can get, which would probably mean all 4x4s with a differentiation depending on the engine size.

4x4's and sporty type cars bought new since last April... expect more news later tonight and after his lordship's budget this week...

Doing this will not prevent people using these vehicles and I fail to see how raising the tax for these, or any other vehicles, is going to seriously help with global warming...how is he going to use the extra revenue collected to do that!

Good question. I'm hoping my VW Golf 1.4S (2002) escapes lightly but I have fears for my Audi TT coupe 2.0 L (2006) falling in to a punishing roadtax bracket.
