my mum had a cervical spinal cord surgery on 7th, she has a wound on her near front neck, it's been almost 2 weeks but she still HAVEN'T removed the dressing, i wasn't there when my dad charged her out of hospital, i asked him did the nurse tell him how to take care of the dressing, he recalled nothing about it, and he said we shouldn't touch it anyway, because he thinks it should be removed by doctor/nurse on the follow up day (which was last friday, but the doctor had an emergency and didn't show up and the date has been postponed to tomorrow) so... is there any dressing should be removed by professional or all kind of dressing should be changing everyday, are we making a horrible mistake?

Why don't you call the doctor & find out for sure instead of asking people here on Y! Answers?

I would advise you to call your doctor's office and speak to the nurse and ask about the dressing change. If the area has sutures, it will definitely need to be attended to right away. You can even go to the doctors office and tell them what is happening. I don't think it would hurt anything to remove the old dressing as long as you wash you hands with soap and water. Then you can at least put on a clean, dry, sterile dressing. But by all means call the doctors office. I don't think you will need to see the doctor for a dressing change. Be proactive! Sitting by and doing nothing is a big mistake. Godlovya'll.

Not all post op dressings need changed every day or every other day for that matter. At the orthopaedic surgeon's office I work for, patients are advised to leave the surgical dressing intact until their first follow up visit at the office. This includes carpal tunnel surgeries, knee arthroscopies, Open Reduction interal fixation of fractures and more. Most post op visits to our office are 10 days post op, so it sounds to me like it should be fine. Good Luck.

She should've received doctor's orders to aid in care of the wound.
In my personal opinion and experience...the dressing should've been changed a few times by now.
Drainage can be very nasty, if not cleaned.

Holy cow, of course it should have been changed. But now that it's been so long (God I hope it's not infected) you HAVE to call the doctor's office before you remove it. Let them know it wasn't changed and it's been almost 2 weeks.

I bet it REEKS.

No, you are not making a mistake.

Go see the Dr tomorrow. It is best to wait for the Dr to remove the dressing.

If nothing was said about changing it, then I would wait and let the doctor change it.
