It's a good idea. Maybe it will force some of the arrogant Mr Toads into smaller jam jars!

Yet another example of government policy designed for London, with little thought to the effect on those living in rural communities.
Note, however, that it is cars with high CO2 emissions that will be punished, not just 4x4s, and not even all 4x4s.
I support taxation to encourage people to buy more environmentally-friendly vehicles, but not as an excuse to generate additional revenue (there should be a drop in taxation on less-polluting cars to make the move revenue-neutral) and not without some procedure to ensure that those who live in rural areas where a normal car is not a practical proposition are not burdened by a tax aimed at urban dwellers.

Yep you heard right! Quote: Annual duty on the 225,000 least fuel efficient vehicles purchased brand new since last April, including most 4x4s and sports cars, is set to rise from £210 to more than £400 over the next two years, according to newspaper reports. Un-quote.
It is yet another way to generate cash I agree. What I want to know is HOW they are going to use this money to improve things and where will it go exactly??? If it is to help with global warming then I want to see where and how they are going to combat it!!!

Just another way of squeezing more money out of us on the pretext of 'saving the planet'.Even if (and it's a big 'if') CO2 emissions cause global warming.. and if every car and 4x4 in Britain were to be taken off the road, we are such a small country it would be like a gnat's piss in the pacific. It would not make any difference. It's just a money making ploy which tries to appease the green lobby(who, incidentally want to raise the road tax of sports cars/4x4s to £2000). This would just increase the number of untaxed, uninsured cars on our road....absolutely stupid.
Whichever party was to oppose this would have a very good chance of winning the election.
This is an election loser...Wake up Tories..this is your chance!!

Agree for Chelsea tractors, but disagree for proper 4x4's, and I would tax all chav modified vehicles £1000 minimum, as most of them have been modified outside of their design criteria.
If you want an easy way of not paying more road tax - stop buying new cars, its only the new ones that are subject to the tax increases.

Agree it is a good way to make money for the government but it will not remove them from the roads. So if it is a green issue that will not work.

good idea for the government,not so good for big families,like me,we have a espace,not 4x 4..
i thought the whole idea for this tax was to get big style cars off the road, not penalize big families,
this government sucks
the people that have these big 4x4 can afford it,when my tax reaches £400,
im seriously going have to get rid of it,which basically means we can not go out as a whole family,
so much for tony blair being a FAMILY man

I fully agree with this and in fact think it should be more than this....
It is a true sign of where individuals have no consideration for anyone or anything beyond themselves and their own lives and whilst we will not change such people at least we can get them to incur the burden for their actions.....
It is truly sobering to walk past a school in the morning and literally see 2/3s of cars being 4x4s..........

You said it all mate!! Yes it is a fantastic way for the Government to screw more money out of us UK citizens!
They dont seem to give a toss about the people who genuinely need 4x4s for their business etc. not everyone buys them as posing machines! Incidentally I dont own a 4x4 but my parents do as they need it to pull a tow-a-van trailer for their modest business! So in answer to other answers, wind your necks in - not all people with 4x4s are rich or arrogant Mr Toads you know!
No wonder so many people go out of business or become bankrupt. Why doesnt this Government take a small cut in all the MPs wages instead, that will save billions per year wont it?

I have also heard that we will see later on this week. I personally think that it is a good idea for a number of reasons. I hope it will reduce the numbers used in the school runs with only one child and adult in it! What is the point of them in the cities?? I hope that they are going to use the money for green issues and not just another money raising trick.
