At least 18 inches with a cement base. So make the hole 12 inches in diameter, 18 inches deep, put the post in, and fill it 10 inches with cement. When dry, cover with dirt.

I would go with 36 inches without cement and at least 24 inches with cement. Any less and it will shift and end up crooked before you know it.

the deeper the better
just remember with cold and heat the post will shift as the ground does

also if you get snow and alot of it a plow will be less likely to wipe out your pole if it is deeper most times it just takes out the box
and it is cheaper to go get a new box from the town then a new post

if you cement it in then 24 inches is fine, if not 36 inches would be better.

you are forgetting one important factor here!!! the post office regulates high high the box can be!!! it doesn't matter how deep you put it as long as it stays up,, but the postal service requires a certain standard height,, and also regulates how far from the walk or road it should be!!!!!!!!!!!1

You should go at least half the length of the pole that the mailbox will be mounted on.

It does depend on where you live and if frost heave is a concern. I don't think 3 feet is unreasonable.
