Since nobody seems capable of defining the technicality here:

Lake Okeechobee is the second-largest natural freshwater lake completely within the continental United States (the lower 48). Indeed, Lake Michigan is number one.

If you include Alaska, Okeechobee is number three.

Lake Michigan is entirely within the USA unlike the other Great Lakes, although it's really part of the Superior/Michigan/Huron lake system.

The Great Salt Lake is the next largest, though it's not fresh water.

Okeechobee is next.

Three largest (even if only one of them is entirely within the US) are:

Lake Michigan (actual area 22300 sq miles, entirely within the US)
Lake Superior (actual area 31700 sq miles, of which 20740 are within the US)
Lake Huron (actual area 23010 sq miles, of which 8610 are within the US).

If we are limiting ourselves to those entirely within the US, we get:

Lake Michigan (22300 sq miles)
Great Salt Lake (2117 sq miles), in Utah
Iliamna Lake (1014 sq miles), in Alaska
