Because it's so common.
The kids with a stigma these days are the ones who have their original two parents living with them and still married. Its a shame. Maybe thats where all the violence in todays children is coming from.

Divorce is more common and acceptable today because women are more independent. Over the years, more and more women have decided to hang up their aprons to go to work outside of the home. Incidentally, this trend in America actually started during the war when the servicemen went overseas and many women went to work in factories. By the 1950's this trend began to take hold, and by the 1960's when women protested for Women's Liberation, there was no turning back.
Years ago, many women felt trapped in bad marriages and were helpless to leave or divorce. Now that women have their own money, often earning much more than their spouses, they are less tolerant and are more likely to divorce.
Both men and women seem to give up on their marriages much quicker than their grandparents would have. It seems that there is less give and take in modern day marriages. Hollywood has probably influenced people as well. After all, if people's heroes and heroines are free to marry and divorce multiple times and still have fans drooling over them, then divorce doesn't seem like an unacceptable practice.

Who cares? Nothing much has changed in more than 50 years (so your timeline is way off--doh!).
And infedility, cruelty & abuse, etc have been commonplace in marriage since there was marriage. Maybe you should be more concerned about why people seem to muck about making each other miserable instead of getting a clue and really being good people.
What's equally amazing is how people get on here and say things like "divorce has become so common over the last 40 years...", and nobody questions that claim... that is based on nothing.

When what was rarely seen in the past, and looked down upon, occurrs more often today--it's regarded as common--NOT necessairly welcomed.
Divorce, I think, is one of the US legal systems most over-abused court-room processes. Divorce today focuses on punishing the other, rather than dissolving a marriage with civil respect for both involved. And the source/focus of divorce's punitive consequences is $$$--where everyone wants a juicy slice of it once divorce is done.
It's time society wakes up and makes efforts at changing things fairly.

Culture dictates that. The culture today is different than 40 years ago.
Unmarried parents are a lot more common, compared to 40 years ago.
Some things about it are better. Now, a woman will not be near as likely to stay in an abusive relationship compared to 40 or 50 years ago.

its more accepted today in my opinion because women have rights and we can stick up for ourselves. we can get out of bad situations if the occasioin arrises. I also think that we arent accountable for our decisions as much as we used to.. so we just jump out of a situation we dont like once we find outselves in it.. before we would live with the choices we made, and make the best of them. we're spoiled now days.

Because nobody believes in the old ways. Everybody gets married knowing that they could get divorced. They dont understand that when they do their vowels its something special. If you think that it wont work out then dont get married because the purpose is being defeated.

i think b/c women are more self sufficient and dependent, 40 years ago a woman was just a "housewife" with no means of supporting herself or her kids...they were stuck in a marriage...now woman can take care of themselves and hopefully arent as dependent as before..they know they can take care of themselves and move on
