Well folks, NOT EVERYONE says things like "things aren't as good as they used to be"... Some things are much better now and most 50 + people have active lives and are interested in such issues as politics, travel and current events.
We discuss what's in the media--why people are so focused on Anna Nicole Smith or Britney Spears and what that means for us as a society. We discuss ways to invest our money, healthcare issues, ideas for improving our homes, how to stay fit and strong, how to eat healthy, websites to get good airfares, etc. We talk about faith, and how we want to make this time of our lives count to leave the world a better place. Finally, we talk about our families, our hopes for their future, our worries for the challenges they face...and the amazing blessing it is to have children and grandchildren.

try making them share their experience, what makes them tic, their family and the like. If you cannot find any topic that will make them talk, try telling them to personalize any topic. in this sense, they will be able to talk about that particular topic. If they do not own a garden for instance, maybe, they have a neighbor who has a garden. then, make them talk about how difficult, or exciting it is to do chores in the garden as they see their neighbor tend to their garden.
If they have already established some kind of bonding with each other, then make them talk about their feellings about some issues, situations or experiences. In this sense, their discussion will be raised to a higher level of thinking. warning: do not try this last one if you are not comfortable with others' feelings or if you do not know how to handle feelings.

The only thing a fifty year old wants to talk about is how nothing is as good as it used to be.

"What life was like when I was 20" They will enjoy swapping stories and reminiscing about many of the best times of their lives.
