This may sound silly... but make sure all of the water is out. Usually water heaters are not that heavy My husband just hauled an old one off this weekend, and after we emptied it out, it weighed maybe 50 pounds tops.

Make sure it is completely drained. Then go to a local U-haul or other truck rental and rent an appliance dolly. They are the ones with the straps and rollers on the back for stairs. The last on I rented was $8 a day. Strap the tank to the dolly. Get a helper, one at the bottom and one at the top and you'll have it out in no time.

The water heater should not weigh that much. Make sure you drain it completely of the water before you move it, If yours weighs a lot with sediments from years of iron water then you need to hire a couple very strong men who know what to do.

you can do some disassembly down to the tank, & then if still too heavy, get an abrasive blade for your skill saw & some eye & ear protection & cut the tank in half!

Hire someone who does that type of hauling so you won't have to.
