Do you think this is too early? I was thinking of just giving a spoon or so at bedtime to get him to sleep longer throughout the night. What are your thoughts?

Its a old tale that a baby will sleep if you add cereal to his or her diet.
When your baby is ready to add more things, she will let you know in her own way, like reaching to get your food and stuff.
Good luck though, and congrats!

I started giving my son rice cereal in with his formula when he was 3 WEEKS old. Most people say that is too young, but my mom did it with me & most of my family has done it with their babies. They are all big & healthy. I just took my son to his 2 month appointment and the doctor said he looked great! He weighs 12lbs & sleeps about 7-8 hours in a row at night. I say go ahead and feed that baby some cereal. Good luck.

Lots of people have said that the Rice cereal is a fib, I am guessing that they have not tried it? My daughter is 6 months and I started her on Rice Cereal with Formula at 3 months and she never slept so well! She will sleep 10 hrs through the night- now that is a break! You have to start them in Infant Feeder bottles- you can buy them sometimes at WalMart, they come in a back of 2, or you can always get them at Toys R Us, and the brand there is Sassy- I am sure you can go to www.sassybaby.com and www.walmart.com

I read some of the answers that you got and I have to say that I disagree. I think she's not too young. I started with my first and second at about that age. It is true that they will sleep better. Their little tummys take longer to digest it than it does formula, so then they don't wake up as often as they would if it were just formula. I started by putting in a tablespoon with their bottles. Then gradually worked up to 2 tbs when they were a little older. Then when they were old enough started giving it to them with a spoon. Keep in mind though that it is thicker than regular formula so it is a little harder for them to get it out of the nipple at first. You might poke a little hole to make it a little bit bigger but make sure you test it, and that it doesn't come too fast for them. They will eventually break in the nipple though. My children are very healthy and haven't developed any food allergies from starting rice cereal at about 3 months. I say do it...it was a life saver for me.

Every baby is different and only you know yours best. If you think he is ready, then by all means, give it to him. Most people would say no but unless they are going to raise your child for you dont listen. My mother fed us cereal early and we couldnt be any healthier. Just know though that he might not like it at first. I tried it with my daugher who is also 3 months and she doesnt want any parts of solids. Nothing is to be put into her mouth except a bottle or a pacifier and boy does she get mad when I try. She eats soo much though that I will keep trying until it sticks since formula isnt quite doing it for her anymore. It just takes getting used to. And just so you know, when parents say their baby is "sleeping through the night" they usually mean 4-6 hours straight, so I wouldnt expect more than that for a while. With infants that is about as long as they will sleep. But as with everything there are exceptions. So, I say yes, give cereal a try, you are his mother and mommy knows best. I wish you luck.

My son was sleeping through the night at 2-1/2 weeks. MY Dr told me that if he started to wake up in the night to give him a tablespoon of rice cereal before his last nurse of the night. That happened at about 4 months old, and it worked..he went right back to sleeping through again.

My baby is 7 weeks old, and has reflux. My doctor told me to put 1 teaspoon of rice in his formula for every 4 ounces to help it sit in his stomach. Also, Enfamil makes a formula that has rice in it..Don't get your hopes up though-even with the rice in his bottle he still needs to be fed every 3 hours.

Its not true. Its a wives tale. Giving them rice cereal doesnt make them sleep longer at all.

Three months is considered early, as most medical professionals want you to wait until atleast 4 months, preferably 5. But our mothers and grand mothers were feeding their babies table food at birth almost, and they all survived.

:)
