The planets closer to the sun than the earth are called inferior planets. The planets farther away from the sun than earth are called superior planets

An inferior planet is said to be "in inferior conjunction" when it is directly between the Earth and the Sun. It is "in superior conjunction" when it is on the opposite side of the Sun from the Earth. A superior planet is "in conjunction" when it is on the opposite side of the Sun from the Earth. A superior planet obviously cannot have an inferior conjunction. When the Earth is at inferior conjunction with respect to an observer on a superior planet we say that planet is "in opposition" from Earth's perspective.

the names inferior and superior refer to how planets are lined up relative to the earth. anything between the earth and sun are inferior anything that is past the earth is superior. the only way to call the earth inferior or superior is when you reference it to something else. for example the earth is inferior to jupiter but it is superior to mercury. hope this helps!!!!

Where's Pluto you ask!?! Well, poor Pluto got demoted and is officially no longer a planet.
