I'm carrying out a questionnaire and I believe that Yahoo answers will be the best
place to put my question. The question is
What are emotions and what function do they serve for you? Are they about 'letting of steam' or communicating with others.
Individual's opinion will be appreciated

Happy to help but "none of the above".

Emotions are mental and physical responses involving sensitivities and feelings at any level between placid and highly excited. They are intensely personal and nothing to do with letting off steam (than CAN be a consequence of unmanaged emotions) though communicating with others is perhaps the ideal of sharing our emotions - that which makes us a social animal.

DEFINITION: Emotion, in its most general definition, is an intense mental state that arises autonomically in the nervous system rather than through conscious effort, and evokes either a positive or negative psychological response. An emotion is often differentiated from a feeling.

Thats exactly was it is; just a reaction. My idea of letting off steam is going to the gym or punching my pillow. For example when I found out that my boyfriend was cheating my natural reaction was yelling, crying and screaming. My nervous system was uncontrollable and my emotions became outraged. I guess it could be about communicating with people but just about everything has to do with communication which brings in sociology.

Our emotions allow us to show or feel certain experiences. Emotions do play a role in communicating with others and our ability to feel empathy for others as well as allowing us to let of steam. They allow us to feel pain, sadness, happiness, joy, love and all of our human feelings.
