The song was inspired by her friend, Tom Petty. She had not had an album out for years and was going in to write a new one. She had been addicted to Klonopin and had an insane time trying to kick it. It completely took her over to the point that she didn't feel she could write anymore. She met Tom one day for lunch to discuss her new album and she wasn't feeling inspired or like she could do it on her own (I am assuming that the drugs had done this to her, since she is incredible). She asked him to help her write songs. He promptly told her NO WAY, you are an incredible song writer...this is what you do, why you have never married and have no children..it has all been because of what you love to do...write music. So go f'in write some music, Stevie. And she did. And did an amazing job, once again.

Well, I know she's had some drug addiction problems and did do a stint at the Betty Ford Clinic at one point. I can't confirm that she has low self-esteem now, but I assume you read or heard a statement of such somewhere. I watched an interview of her a few years back where she talked about her life and career. She said in hindsight that, although she's had this amazing career as a musician, as part of Fleetwood Mac and then as an artist on her own, she had always been saddened and regrets the fact that she never really settled down, married, had children or had much of a life outside of music. She talked about how driven Mick Fleetwood was to perform and record 24/7. It kind of reminded me of how I've heard the Van Halen brothers described; their passion just controls them to the point that all they want to do is live, breathe, eat and sleep music. They could perform and compose all day and all night, it's almost like an addiction. Anyway, she had said that he was so driven, so when the band was together they were always performing, composing, singing, etc. It didn't leave alot of time for a personal life. But she also admits that this was her choice and this is just how her life turned out. I mean, she didn't exactly have a terrible life, either. So maybe the self-esteem issues you've heard of are a result of her regrets that she didn't get to completely fulfill her personal goals in life. If you would like to know more about the entire history of Fleetwood Mac, I've included a link below that is very insightful. Hope this helps and good luck to you!

i too am with the others I'm not sure about the esteem problem but did hear Stevie say that she didn't want to go on tour before until she lost some weight, the painkillers she was hooked on or Bella Donna's,such as the term goes made a mess for her,but i think she is doing ok and her concert touring will begin if not already, she has been playing vegas alot but is stepping out a few more places with some guy chris isaaks, cant wait to see her,,also i agrre with the guy who said she couldnt sing..duh...she is incredeble and can sing anything rock, country and some old blues stuff she is a talent..ps it was a long time ago that i heard about the weight problem and see she never quite dropped it all but she will always be a beauty..to me

How do you know she does?? you have been reading to much trash the reporters dream up to keep them in the news
most artists write all sorts of lyrics about songs it does not mean they are true , she may have been feeling a bit down when she wrote that particular song, as a vocalist i cannot perform if iam upset so it would be hard to write a song when your down and out completly

Actually, you are takeing one song out of many. "That made me Stronger" was actually written about Tom Petty. Yes, she was going through a really bad time at the time. She asked Tom Petty to write a song with her, but Tom knew Stevie, he knew that Stevie likes to write her own songs. He basicly told her to get over what's eating her, and go write a song herself. Stevie Nicks is a songwriter that writes how she feels at the time. That Made Me Stronger was about a bad time, but someone helping her through it with tough love. (Tom) So she has her up times, and her down times, like everyone else.
Edit to say: Also during that down time Stevie was ridiculed by the public about her weight gain. That's why she was so depressed she didn't want to write, and didn't want to preform live for a while.

I have no idea?
Do you know her? Ask her then.
How can you speculate like that..Was it something she said in an interview.
Most musicians are their own worst critic, remember that.
