Besides improving food crop plants (making them more drought-resistant for example) genetic engineering has produced a lot of human enzymes and hormones. For example human insulin can now be produced for diabetics instead of using pig insulin. Also human growth hormone has been produced to treat growth problems. Scientists are also trying to develop treatments for genetic diseases like sickle-cell anemia. They are producing vaccines also. And anti-toxins for people alergic to bee stings, for example.

Genetic engineering is based on understanding of genetic processes. This has given us a systematic way to understand what and who we fundamentally are, how we work, and how to stop genetic attacks (such as from a virus). And we know that HIV/AIDS could not be treated without knowledge of human and HIV genetic action.
