I lived in the tropics for 17 years where orchid grew naturally. This is what mother nature did to keep them healthy. From May through November, she watered them almost daily. Of course they had very good drainage. From December through April, she left then alone in the humid air. You could mist them in low humidity

Believe it or not Orchids do pretty well with minimal care and lots of patience. It takes a while for them to flower but once they do you will have a 2/3 month show of beauty. I water once a week and fertilize with fish emulsion once a month. Some planting medium for orchids such as Spanish moss might hold the water longer so be sure to hand test to see if it's still most before watering To keep the plant from sitting in standing water place small stone in the saucer. When the plant stops flower DO NOT cut back the flower stem. That single stem could send out buds for another 2 blooms. Only cut them back when they are totally brown.
