Well "Green Day" means a day you are high on pot!
Green actually stands for the weed not the colour.
They chose red and black because:
You might've noticed that they wore no particular suits or costumes in the PRE AMERICAN IDIOT ERA!
But while recording American Idiot-They got this feeling that they wanted to look smart like other great bands, so they chose a particular costumes. And the colour actually represents the campaign they wanted to create with the album-Red for the blood THE IDIOT BUSH was shedding and black to show that they were rebels with a cause.
