Do a search on nationalism!

Nationalism, in short, is the love and devotion that people have for their own nation.
It was a big thing which came up around 1900.
Before that, you belonged to a different duke or king or whathaveyou every 30-100 years, and it didn't matter: You just pay your taxes to somebody else and go on with your own life.
Nationalism is the notion you belong to one nation and not to whoever conquered your village during the last war.

Unfortunately, from that love for one's country also followed that other countries are allways second-best to your country; and that sacrificing other countries' land or people to suit your needs is a good thing, because your country is 'better' and therefore has more rights.

Nationalism looks inwards and is scared of everything outside your country.
