The sewerage system in Greece is not the same as US or UK. All waste goes into a septic tank outside, the pipes aren't wide enough for paper or sanitary waste. I moved to a Greek island 5 years ago, and I hated the idea of having to put the paper in the bin!!!

It's no big deal now though, you get used to it, it's not smelly or anything like that. Don't ignore the signs in your hotel or bars.restaurants etc.. as the the toilets get blocked it's a nightmare for those who have to clean up the mess.

Crete is beautiful, don't worry about the toilet thing!!!!

I've been to Rethymnon in Crete it's a really lovely place. It is true that you shouldn't flush toilet paper down the toilet in Greece. They provide you with bins to put the paper in but I know I flushed it down the toilet. I don't think it's very hygeinic to keep waste paper in a bin. Be careful if you do flush though because you might clog the system!

Ive never been to Crete but have been to Rhodes, and like all other Greek islands, you can not flush paper down the toilets as the piping system is too narrow to cope with it. Instead, you are provided with sanitary bins to place all your soiled rags in.

All over Greece, in small towns, you can flush the paper, but you shouldn't. Because the paper goes not to central draining system, but big holes in the earth, that fill up and block if you put paper in it. There are bins in the toilets and you throw the paper there.

Yes, I have been to Crete and yes it is true you cannot flush loo paper! It's because their sewage system cannot cope with it. It's a bit disgusting but we got used to it! Wouldn't like to be the maid though!

Beautiful beaches makes up for it.

It seems to be the same for the rest of Greece including the other islands because my brother went to Corfu and Rhodes and both times he found that you have to put your toilet paper into a bin near the toilet, not in the toilet.

YES! IT'S 150% TRUE!!!
Brilliant, I was there a few years ago and we ignored the warning. We were in this grotty hotel with a lovely view of a white-wash brick wall. My friend and I flushed paper, blocked the toilet and believe me, hangovers and an unflushable toilet are a nasty combo.

It all depends on the hotel. Grotty hotels do not have a good enough system. However, I have been to Crete several times the last one being June 2006, and at least in my hotels we did not have to do that. Heracleion, Chania and Ag. Nikolaos were the cities I visited and worked in.

Yes.

Depend on rules of where you are staying. In some places you cannot flush the loos at all, in some places your loo may be able to cope with one or two square of loo paper at a time but definitely not anything bulky, you could risk sewage spilling out onto your bathroom floor if you do not observe advice given on arrival at your destination.

My advice just ask when you get there.
