We used to play a game we called "Chase". It involved the whole neighborhood. We divided up into two teams, made forts and hideouts, drew out elaborate maps and plans in "secret" code and spent as much of the day and early evening as our parents would permit, trying to spy on and/or capture members of the other group. It got pretty raucous and there were a few neighbors who weren't crazy about streams of kids (10 to 12 girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 13) tearing through their yards. BUT it never got nasty or violent.
Plus, those were the days when kids could play in residential neighborhoods without having to worry about weirdos or traffic or private property, trespassers will be shot.
We also played pirates and cowboys and Indians, but Chase was far and away our all time favorite.
