No contest here. Japanese is the way to go. Learning to speak french will only be useful if you plan to go to France or some nations in Africa. Hell, even the Parisian youth are primarily speaking english, leading to the popular thought that french is a dying language. The Japanese economy, however, is thriving and growing. All of the Asian cultures are becoming more ecomonically powerful. Corporations and governments will need translators. If it's available at your school, I'd particularly recommend learning Chinese.

If it were me, I'd learn French. Not only will it come in handy when you travel to France (or perhaps even Canada!) but your knowledge of correct Frech pronunciation will impress many a colleague/boss when you're having dinner at that fancy French restaurant.
Also, French will give you an advantage if you want to work in the United Nations.
Japanese is good if you intend to do business with Japan. Japanese also comes across as exotic to some. But that's about it.
The only country in the world that speaks Japanese is Japan but there are numerous countries in the world that speak French.
Hope this helps. =)

You're presuming that something limits you to one.
My experience with language (I currently speak three and am learning a fourth now) is that if you are capable of learning a second language, you can learn as many as you have a need to use. If you can't learn several, you can't learn a second anyway.
If it's a matter of order, which to learn first, I'd probably go with Japanese. The reason is that you will have to start from zero with a new system of writing, and if you can learn how to do that, you'll find additional languages much easier, as you will have "learned how to learn".

French is considered to be the language of diplomacy world wide. It is widely spoken even in the Orient.
Japanese is useful (my hubby speaks it), but unless you are planning to be in business with Japanese contacts for a majority of your work, it is not much more use than any other language skill.
It all really boils down to whether you are planning to learn the language as an elective for fun or whether you plan to use it on a daily basis.
With the constant influx of Hispanic persons in the U.S., more people are needed who can speak, interpret and write in Spanish.
Good Luck!

Decide this by deciding where you career will be. If you continue it in the west, then prefer French. But if it is east, prefer Japanese. Learning more languages is good and great. So, if you have time, prefer doing both.

French is always good because you can use it on a resume as a second language for a job.
