Hey Jess! Yes, there are extra charges for making or receiving calls in the Domincan Republic. First you need to call Verizon (*611 from your phone) and have them activate International Dialing (it's free, it just needs to be on your plan). You can then place or receive calls at their roaming rate. For the DR, that's $1.29 a minute, which is a little steep. Certain countries, like Mexico, are cheaper. That is still your best bet, as the "Global Rental" phones from Verizon others have mentioned are $3.99 a day and still charge you over $1.49 a minute. I'm leaving my phone turned off when I go down there. We're gonna be on the beach, who do you need to call?! lol

It may not work over there the technology Verizon uses is for the U.S but you may call and rent a global phone from verizon at a discounted rate and it would be cheaper than a calling card.

you may extremely get an unlocked international telephone before you go away for Japan, then once you arrive, you may purchase a SIM card at any finding out to purchase mall and use it as a pay as you circulate. in case you get a international unlocked telephone you would be ok. Verizon does not have stable international insurance in any respect the two, so drop them anyhow. it extremely is what I do and it extremely works ok. Wow, Japan, that rocks. have relaxing!
