You’re completely missing the important issues here. This is a major mess-up by the Bush administration. The usual “Clinton did it” defense doesn’t work in this situation. Bush also replaced nearly all of the US attorneys when he took office in 2001. That is irrelevant to the current controversy.
The current issue is the unprecedented firing of eight US attorneys in the middle of a presidential term for reasons that are highly dubious. In addition, the Bush administration officials lied about the reasons. These firings highlight the pressures being put on US attorneys to prosecute (or not prosecute) individuals based on their political party affiliations and the retribution that results when they fail to comply. Also, the recent amendment to the Patriot Act that gives the president the power to fill the interim vacancies for an unlimited term (without Senate approval) raises further concerns as to the motives for and the timing of the firings.
The amount of money that will be spent on investigating this is worth every penny because it is definitely in the public interest and for the public’s future protection to find out what really happened to these prosecutors. They work for us and they are supposed to be prosecuting in our best interests.

Republicans spent over 100 million investigating Clinton.
Only 11 million investigating 9/11 for the 9/11 families.
(originally it was only 8 million and only after the families protested that they raised it to 11 million)
Pointing a finger now? Didn't think so!

Seems like the GOP is more than merely interested, also:

You really must do a better job at finding real divisive issues, I think. For example, if we were to have spent, say $60 million of taxpayer money investigating a stained blue party dress; now, *that* would really be a misuse of power! Oh, wait a sec... the "moral Republicans" did that one, already...

The Republicans can jump in anytime. This is going to turn out to be a huge political scandal that all Americans, not just Democrats should be concerned about.

I'm not an accoutant, but I bet it is a very tiny fraction of the cost of the endless Iraq War.

Is it really so difficult to understand that the problem is not the firings themselves, but rather, the reason behind them?
