Sure
Hopefully you know that .42 is the same as 42/100
So all you have to do is take the 2 which is already a whole number (so it would be 200/100) and add it to the 42/100
242/100
you can then type this into your calculator and hit the equals button (twice normally for most calc's) and you'll get 2.42

The easiest way to convert a decimal to a fraction is to use a power of 10 as the denominator (bottom) of your fraction.
Take the 2.42, and ignore the decimal point. This will become the numerator (top) of your fraction.
Now, since there were TWO numbers after the decimal point, you will want to use a power of 10 that has TWO zeros, which would be 100.
Therefore, your basic fraction would be 242/100. You can then simplify to lowest terms from there. Both the top and bottom can be divided by 2, giving you 121/50, which does not reduce any farther.

2 42/100. Reduce from there, in steps if you have to--
42/100 = 21/50 - cannot go lower
2 21/50
Anything to the right of the decimal point is over 10, or 100, or 1000, etc.
