Milk of Magnesia or other laxatives
We generally do not recommend laxatives for pregnant women, although providers may recommend them under special circumstances. (Some physicians recommend them sooner than others.)
We are cautious with laxatives because their regular use can make your intestinal system dependant on them. Of special concern during pregnancy, laxatives can cause intestinal cramping that may be hard to differentiate from preterm labor.
That said, you are not alone in dealing with constipation during pregnancy. Many pregnant women have it, to varying degrees, and we have several suggestions that may help relieve the problem.
Our first recommendation is to drink more fluids — about three quarts a day. Most of that should be water.
Fiber-rich foods also are good for reducing constipation. Eat more fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads (check the wrapper for at least 3 grams of fiber per slice), brown rice, oat bran and beans (pinto, garbanzo, kidney and the like).
If you increase fluids and fiber in your diet and still have problems, then you can try a supplement, such as fiber pills (FiberCon is one example) or fiber powders (such as Metamucil) that can be mixed with liquid.
These steps will relieve most pregnancy-related constipation. However, if you still need help after these measures, try a stool softener, such as Colace. Stool softeners are available without a prescription.
If that also fails, talk with your provider about laxatives, including Milk of Magnesia. Yes, Milk of Magnesia is safe and will quickly fix the problem — but it isn't the best long-term solution during pregnancy for the reasons we described above. So, we prefer it far down the list of strategies.

I took milk of magnesia while I was pregnant but taking other "laxatives" are not recommended. I would also try eating things such as prunes, raisins, fruits usually work really good except bananas, I have heard they can make constipation worse unless you are now experiencing diahrrea like you say than I wouldn't take any more laxatives. I know when I was little my mother took me to Lyola University in Chicago, Illinois and they recommended a hamburger or cheeseburger from McDonalds and that did the trick with the diahrrea.
Oh and when it comes to constipation during pregnancy I would keep loaded up on the water, cranberry juice (for urinary tract infections) and milk (isn't it amazing how much they tell you to drink in one day?) and walking also helps with constipation (regular physical activity) and a fiber rich diet. Although constipation and diahrrea do occur during pregnancy it isn't easy on your body having either of them nor is it necessarily good.
May I add that both constipation and diahrrea are a physical symptom of pregnancy! I didn't experience it until this time and I also broke out on my face which I wasn't too happy about because that never happens to me!
Good Luck!

When I was seriously constipated, I was told to try Milk of Magnesium twice a day- once in the am and once in the pm. It could take a little bit to work, so be patient.
IF is doesn't work, you can always try glycerin suppositories (totally safe during pregnancy). If that doesn't work, ask your doc about buying some Colace (stool softener). After I got the ok to take Colace, I NEVER had another episode of constipation!
I hope you find relief soon! When I was 11 weeks along, I got so constipated that I had to go the ER to have TWO enemas (the first one didn't work)!! also you can try this natural remedy it helped me a lot https://bit.ly/1uOgNq3

Instead of milk of magnesia, how about just using stool softeners? much more gentle. The constipation is because of the extra iron you are taking for the baby. talk to your doctor about this. good luck.

I used it once early on in my pregnancy and the same thing happened to me. This is normal. You could try lessening the dosage (maybe to about half?) and it might stop the diarrhea, resulting in just softer stools. You could also try adding more fiber to your diet. I began eating cereal a lot more, as well as fruits and veggies. Also try to drink lots of water. It doesn't eliminate constipation completely, but you won't have to hold it all inside for another week! Good luck!
