it seems to be a lot of misconceptions about the millitary, and two years and a deployment would give a person an idea of how it is to be part of a community and to be productive and responsible in that community.

I believe EVERYONE should be required to perform federal service of some kind. Full federal rights, such as voting, after you serve. If you do not have the back bone to serve your country, you should have no say in how it is run.

No, not military service unless the person chooses it. Some people have no desire to learn how to shoot a gun or be part of a group like that. Also, some people just aren't suited for that kind of thing. However, there would be nothing wrong with some kind of service, like being in Americorps.

Wouldn't that kind of eliminate the principle of freedom? While you may not want to hear all the negative remarks about the military, it is their opinion and their right to express that opinion. People sound off about all kinds of things that they have no idea about. You can't make everything mandatory just so they have a better understanding. Although I agree it would be nice sometimes........

No. Two years is barely enough time to train a soldier to be truly competent in his job. Even then, conscripts would be less motivated than our volunteer military. It would be a wasted investment.
