I've never seen so many people get their panties in a bunch over such an obvious, over the top visual effects movie.

The movie is an exaggeration of an historical battle involving three hundred Spartans.
The Persian Wars were the reason for the "Battle of Thermopylae" where hollywood took the premise of their movie.
There were only three hundred Spartans against thousands of Persians at a strategic land point and the Persians could not get by the three hundred Spartans. It was only by deceit and treason that the Persians won the battle. Every Spartan died in the battle but if the reinforcements had arrived in time the Persians would have died instead.
The Spartans held their ground waiting for reinforcements that never came. It was an epic battle and it is a true story.
The Hollywood version is designed to sell commercially so a lot has been added and a lot has been detracted.

It is loosely based upon the Battle of Thermopylae in 480BCE. I read the Greek historians when I was age 10. I see many errors in the movie. 6000 Greeks from the major cities went to Thermopylae, not just the 300 Spartans and their allies. Xerxes was not a nude giant with face piercings and he did not talk to Leonidas. He had long black hair and beard and wore robes and crown. It was his descendant Darius III who was the giant among Persian shahs. The Greek shields were bigger and their spears were longer. Their swords were leaf-shaped. They wore cuirasses (metal body armor) with leather tabs covering the hips and greaves opn their legs. Leonidas was age 60, and a big battle was fought to recover his body when he was slain. At the end, most Greek weapons were broken, and they broke skulls of Persians with fists. They were bred for strength, and their bones were incredibly strong. The Persian officers had to whip their men to make them face the fierce Spartans. In the final showdown, the 300 killed 3600 before missiles overcame them. Ephialtes was not a hunchback in the histories I read. Shall I continue? I could list many more errors.

People were at first saying that it was based off the story in the Bible about Gideon and his army of 300 defeating the million soldiers before their back-up came.
But the movie is based on real actual events that took place about the Spartans

Not really. They changed a couple of minor things to make the movie more interesting but the majority of the information is correct. The History Channel has been running the 'true' story lately, to coincide with the movie - try and check it out. I'd tell you the differences, but I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who may not have seen it yet.

It was a fiction movie. In fact the movie could be considered science fiction. I liked the movie but I and the vast majority of people realize that it was not a historically accurate film. If they do they are idiots.
