That first answer is insane. Babies know who their mothers are from the day they are born. They recognize voices from when they are in the room and they know the scent of their mother. At four months a baby absolutely knows who is who. This does not mean, however, that your wife can't go back to work. If you can afford a nanny, that would be best and the baby can be conditioned to accept care from the nanny. If a nanny is too expensive, try to find care that again, will allow you to ease the baby into care and get to know the caregiver. It might take a little more time and planning but if the care given to the baby is first rate, he or she won't suffer because mommy went back to work.

Are you saying she would like to return to work? Um, at this age baby probably is just crying because she is hungry or sleepy or just wants to be held. She probably is not specifically crying for mommy, although it may seem so because maybe mommy is who always feeds her, or holds her? Do you work as well? If you are both going to work then baby will need daycare/nanny/etc. Baby will be fine, just pick him/her up and love on him/her. Feed baby sometimes (if this is possible) and rock baby sometimes. Baby will be fine as long as someone is taking care of him/her. Now, soon baby will determine mommy/daddy/nanny and cry for certain people, but I don't think that at four months she is already doing this.
