Fred is one of several men I'd put as the best....I would include Gene Kelley & their mutual choreographer, Hermes Pan - and I'd include Gregory Hines & Savion Glover & Baryshinikov in there too.....you didn't ask, but for women I'd say, Eleanor Powell & Cyd Charisse (I know Ann Miller should be in there too....she's my 3rd placer :)

I'd rather put it as he was the best ballroom dancer of his time.
Fred Astire was most certainly very good. He contributed a lot to making ballroom dancing popular. He had no equals when he danced. He is very inspirational to watch.

best "dancer". Dance is a wide variety. It's not just ballet, salsa etc. So your saying that Fred can beat ANY bboy, popper, krumper, etc. too? After all, he is the best "dancer". Wrong.

for his time and era yes , noone was smoother and more charming and damn he got to dance with some very fine ladies
