since trying to fix my heater on bmw 740 i heard a gong and now its telling me to put in a 4 digit code before i can start the car. i have tried doing what it says in the book about disconnecting the battery for 2 min then put it back on and wait another ten minutes while the counter counts down but the car still wont start

sorry to say but yours will be different to others, take a look in your BMW handbook someone might have written it in there if your lucky enough..
if not you need to contact your local BMW garage & give them the info they ask, if they cant give you a code they will have to reprogram it on a computer..

4 choices for 4 places: 4 * 4 * 4 * 4 = 16 * 16 = 256 possibilities OR if you meant that the digits aren't to be repeated: 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 12 * 2 = 24 possibilities

Actually, probably not. The code is different for each individual car.
You will need to contact a BMW dealer with your vehicle's VIN and provide proof of your ownership (e.g. the registration document plus some form of personal ID). You may be charged for this service.

Have you tried ringing up the person/company you bought the car from they may be able to help

Take your log book and proof of ID to your local BMW dealer, they will then be able to help you
