This is probably physically impossible now, but maybe it won't be in the future:

Suppose the basketball team recruited the school's best long jumper. If he were to take off from behind the three point line, and while in the air receive a pass and complete the alley-oop, would that basket be worth three points?

They should make that one a four pointer, because of the crowd pleasing aspect.

Hypothetically, Yes. It isn't where you land, it's where you take off before you make a hoop that determines whether it's worth 2 or 3. No one is dunking from behind the arc, though.

Whoever said some long-jumper could do it, (answerer before me), I believe Mike Powell ran full-blast for 120 feet or so and took off straight and narrow as he could, with recless abandon and landed in a sandpit. This is not the same as being involved in a basketball game, syncing with a teammate, catching an alley-oop and still being at least 2 and a half feet off the ground so you can dunk it.

Ask Mike Powell, he's the world record holder in the Long Jump (over 29 ft). I once saw him take off from about four inches inside the three point line (high school three point line) and put it down. I'm guessing he might be able to do it.

It would still be 2 points simply because he would catch the ball while already in 2 point territory . Now if he caught the ball behind the 3 point line it would be worth 3 points.

No, it would be worth two points (the shooter's feet would have to be behind the 3 point line for it to count as three.)

Hypothetical - Yes, Fun - NO.

Who Cares? Will never ever ever ever ever happen. Be realistic

No MELOFAN, Josh Smith couldn't do it. He does have hops though.

that would be cool, but it would probably happen in a dunk contest instead of a game. Josh smith (hawks) could do it. Dude's got HOPS!!!
