This is a brief summary of how the tenses are used in English. Let me know if you have specific questions. The BOLD words give you the formation of the tense.

We use the past simple for when the action is finished and the time, whether stated or implied, is finished.

eg:
I WENT to Italy last year (stated time)
I LOST my temper when he arrived. (implied or abstract time)

We use the past continuous (be+ -ing) to express an action which was in progress when something else happened. Usually this tense is used when the time is less important than the action.

eg:
I WAS still COOKING dinner when they arrived
She told me while we WERE WALKING to work.

The present perfect (have+past participle) is a tense which expresses an action that happened in the past but which still influences or relates to the present.

eg:
I HAVE BEEN to Italy. (They are talking about Italy)
but
I went to Italy last year (they are talking about what they did last year)

I HAVE FINISHED my homework. Can I watch the TV now?

I HAVE LOST my keys!
HAVE you LOOKED in the car?

We use the past perfect (past of have + past participle) as a "double past" tense. ie....when we have an action which happened BEFORE another action in the past.

eg:
When we arrived at the party, the magician HAD FINISHED his act. (the act finished before we arrived).

Valentina HAD already GONE to bed by the time we got home. (She went to bed before you got home)
